Enjoying the snow up in Mt. Lemmon
Sunday morning we decided to take a trip up to Mt. Lemmon since it was cold and rainy all day. We were hoping when we got up there it would snow like it did our last trip back in March. We felt adventurous so we traveled the back road to Mt. Lemmon called Oracle Control Road. Jose first tried out this route during a Land Rover Driving Experience back in September. First off, I’ve never even seen the town of Oracle, AZ, so that was cool. Wish I would’ve taken some pictures of it, especially this motel where it was just little triangle houses. But thanks to Google, I was able to find pictures of it! How cute are these little motel buildings? It’s called The Chalet Village Motel if you are visiting and want to stay there.
Soon after we passed Oracle, we started to make our trip up the mountain which was rainy and muddy. We loved every minute of it! Plus the clouds were so low, there was times where we only had 10 feet of visibility at least! It was fun to do a bit of off-roading and enjoy the scenery. It’s absolutely beautiful and you don’t feel like you are stuck in the desert like Tucson. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this route if you don’t have a 4×4 though! It can get rough sometimes, but if you love dirt roads and a change in scenery while you visit Mt. Lemmon, you should try it! There is also camping grounds that route as well.
Plus you get to see cows! Lots of them! And who doesn’t like cows?!
Poor little calves had no idea what was going on, they kept running aside our truck.
Aww look at that cute face! Too bad they’re so yummy, ha ha. (Don’t judge me… I like my steaks)
We must have saw about 20 cows during the whole trip. Also saw deer which was cool, but they took off before we could snap a picture though.
Once we got to the paved part of Mt. Lemmon (Catalina Highway), we were where the shops/restaurants were. Very cool! So we stopped by to grab some food and warm up, it was raining pretty hard at this point. Still no fresh snow though. We were sad, but overall the trip was very fun! Luckily for us, there was still lots of leftover snow for us to enjoy from the previous weeks (as you see in the first picture of this post). I love Mt. Lemmon and think we will be taking the route a lot more! If you plan a trip up there and want to use the Oracle Control Road, be sure to visit before December 15th, because we were told they close it off after that date. The whole trip took 5 hours, from the time we left home and returned. We live at the bottom of Oro Valley and took Catalina Highway the way down. So that gives you an idea on the time frame if you plan a visit.
Would love to hear if anyone else has taken this route and what they thought about it?
